About the brand

The company that lit the first cars

HELLA was founded on 11 June 1899 by Sally Windmüller in Lippstadt, Germany, as Westfälische Metall-Industrie Aktien-Gesellschaft. It began by making lamps, lanterns and horns for carriages, bicycles and the very first automobiles — and its 1908 acetylene headlamp, the “System Hella”, gave the brand its name.

More than 125 years later HELLA is one of the world’s leading automotive lighting and electronics specialists, supplying original-equipment headlamps to vehicle manufacturers worldwide. It produced the world’s first matrix LED headlamp in 2013 and invests heavily in research and development every year.

Since 2022 HELLA has been part of the FORVIA Group — one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers — and continues to trade under its own name as FORVIA HELLA. Every aftermarket light it sells is engineered to the same standards as the lamps fitted to new vehicles at the factory.

HELLA ValueFit is HELLA’s value range: quality proven by HELLA at a more accessible price. It includes the Supernova, Supernova 2.0, Blade and Black Magic lines shown above.

Spotlight FAQ

Everything you want to know before you buy

Are HELLA spotlights legal to use on South African roads?
The HELLA ValueFit Supernova, Supernova 2.0, Blade and Comet 550 lamps we sell are ECE approved, meaning they were tested to the same European standards used by vehicle manufacturers. Driving and spot lights act as additional high beams: wire them so they only work with your main beam, and switch them off for oncoming traffic, when following another vehicle, and in town. Light bars and work lights are generally intended for off-road use. If in doubt, check with your local testing station or insurer before fitting.
What does “ECE approved” actually mean?
ECE approval means the lamp was independently tested and certified against UN ECE regulations for beam pattern, brightness, colour and electrical safety (EMC, ECE-R10). Each approved high-beam lamp carries a reference number on the lens; under ECE rules, the reference numbers of all high beams on a vehicle added together may not exceed 100.
Spot beam, driving beam or flood beam — which do I need?
A spot beam is a narrow, long-reach pencil of light for high-speed open roads and seeing far ahead. A driving or combo beam adds width so you also see the road edges and animals on the verge. A flood beam is wide and short — ideal for camp, reversing or work areas. Many customers pair a set of spotlights with a light bar for the best of both.
Which size should I choose: 6″, 7″ or 9″?
Bigger lamps hold more LEDs and a larger reflector, so they throw light further. As a guide from the manufacturer specs: the Supernova 6″ reaches roughly 292 m at 1 lux, the Supernova 2.0 7″ puts out about 6 720 lm, and the 9″ about 8 400 lm. The flagship Antares 9″ reaches beyond 800 m. Choose 6″–7″ for bakkies and SUVs with limited bumper space, and 9″ for maximum reach on bull bars.
Will they work on my 12V bakkie or 24V truck?
Yes. The Supernova, Supernova 2.0, Blade and Antares ranges are multi-voltage (roughly 10–30V), so the same lamp fits 12V and 24V vehicles. The Comet 550 is a 12V halogen lamp.
Is a single light or a pair? Does it come with a wiring harness?
Check the product title: “Kit” or “Pair” listings include two lamps, while “Single” listings are priced per lamp. The Supernova 6″ kit and Antares set include a wiring harness; for single lamps, ask us about the HELLA ValueFit two-lamp wiring harness kit.
Can I install them myself?
If you're comfortable with basic 12V wiring, yes — kits include mounting hardware and instructions, and the Antares is plug-and-play with H4 and HB3 adapters. Always use a relay and fuse (included in HELLA harnesses), wire the lights to the high-beam circuit, and route cables away from heat and moving parts. If you're unsure, a qualified auto electrician should fit them.
Are they waterproof and tough enough for gravel and dust?
Yes. Supernova 2.0 lamps are rated IP67, IP68 and IP69 and the Antares is IP69K, meaning they're sealed against dust, submersion and high-pressure washing. Die-cast aluminium housings with cooling fins and polycarbonate lenses handle corrugations, heat and stone chips. Protective covers are available for most models — just ask.
What is the ring / halo on some lamps?
Supernova 2.0, Blade and Antares lamps have an integrated LED position light (daytime running light) that gives your vehicle a distinctive look and keeps you visible. On Blade lamps the position light can be white or amber. Note that only white position lights carry ECE approval on some models.
Do the spotlights get hot or drain my battery?
LEDs run far cooler and draw much less current than halogen. For example, a Supernova 2.0 7″ draws about 5.4 A at 12V. Only run the lights with the engine running, and the cooling fins on the housing manage heat automatically.
Is there a warranty?
All HELLA products we sell are genuine and covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Keep your invoice, and contact us if you have any problem with your lights.
Are your HELLA products genuine?
Yes. Man Up Automotive sells genuine HELLA and HELLA ValueFit products only — no copies or grey imports.
